Careers

As I’m a senior here at Elizabethtown College, I, like all the rest, am trying to find a job for after graduation. I’m an English Professional Writing major and as such am mainly looking for a job as a technical writer, where I would work for something like an engineering firm.

Technical writing jobs, like this job with Aerotek, tend to have the same general requirements. These requirements include excellent communication, research, and analytical skills; proficiency with word processing applications; and, most importantly, being able to write the documents the company requires. Many companies also require that applicants have knowledge in various applications. Most companies require that applicants have a bachelor’s degree plus a certain number of years of experience and being a “team player.” Other companies put that the applicant needs to be willing to accept a salary that is generally between $50,000 and $75,000.

To increase my chances of getting a job that I’m looking for, I know I need to set up some goals for the semester to make sure my skills are up to par. I feel that I’ve got good communication skills, so I should be set for that (most job positing I’ve found include this). I do, however, need to improve my analytical skills. This is one thing I have always stuggled with, and I’m not quite sure how to address this issue.
